Starting Off: Concealer 101

Hi everyone!
I'd like to present to you the second week of The So Project. If you don't know what it is, it's a project to introduce beginners to the world of beauty. This week, we will all be talking about our knowledge of Concealer. Last weeks topic was Skincare, if you'd like to see that, too.

Who Needs Concealer?
Concealer is used to conceal, hide, or cover up any skin imperfections such as blemishes, pimples, discoloration, etc. Think of foundation, but much more concentrated. You should never use concealer to cover up a large portion of your face as too much of it could clog pores. That's what foundation is for.

Types of Concealers
While there are several different types of concealers, I'll be dividing concealers into three categories: solid, liquid and cream. (Did you think I was going to say gas? Lol.) It doesn't matter what they come in - either sticks, pots, or tubes - they will always be either of the three.

Liquid Concealers
Liquid concealers generally come in a tube, wand applicator or pens. They are usually not as concentrated or as opaque as solid concealers, but they can usually be built up to full coverage. Usually, these can be used to cover up under the eyes. Try not to use anything too drying under the eyes as it is a very sensitive area and can create premature aging when using drying products under the eyes. I personally use Smashbox's concealer and it's been working wonderfully so far.

Solid Concealers
Solid concealers are usually much more concentrated and can hide highly pigmented scars, blemishes, etc. These usually come in either pots, sticks or pencils. Likewise, different types also vary in opacity. Solid concealers usually have the highest opacity of the three and last the longest. However, they do need more effort to blend and can sometimes look cakey on dry skin. For this reason, solid concealers are usually more suitable for those with oily/combination skin.

Cream Concealers
Cream concealers are basically the in between of liquid and solid concealers. If solid and liquid had a baby, it'd be a cream concealer. Cream concealers are great because they aren't as sheer as the liquid concealers, but won't cake as fast as a solid concealer. I like using Laura Mercier's undercover pot concealer because it has two varying types of consistency. One is much softer and slightly more sheer than the other one.

  1. I actually have only had luck with liquid concealers.. Id prefer to build them up as other types of concealers dont work for me! I have oily/dry skin and it sucks because I either look too dry or too oily!

  2. Yeah, that's what happens to me sometimes! I think it comes from also having dry skin and not exfoliating the top layer off. But then even with that, on super hot days, it just melts off. I guess it's all about finding the balance.

  7. I do not have a favorite concealer because I haven't found the perfect one for me yet :( I sometimes reach for my MAC Studio Finish concealer or my Maybelline Fit Me concealer though.

  8. Sometimes I think its all about trial and error. But we all know how expensive that can be - especially if you can't return it. (That's why I love sephora.) I love that I'm able to return something I don't like.
