Starting Off: Foundation for Beginners

Hello Everyone!
This is week three of #TheSoProject- an idea thought of by the lovely Steph @ StephsInsideVoice. This is a collaboration between participating beauty bloggers to show those "starting off" in the beauty world an introduction. Every week, for nine weeks, we'll be posting a new topic. This weeks topic is all about Foundation.

Foundation
Foundation is a product that helps cover up subtle skin discolorations such as redness, uneven skin tone, etc. It's perfect for those that just need a little bit of help covering any minor discolorations. Foundation usually comes in three consistencies - liquid, cream and powder. I'll be talking about each one the next couple paragraphs.

Liquid Foundation
Liquid Foundation is like a tinted moisturizer but much more opaque that it can be sometimes be semi to full coverage. This is perfect for those that have dry skin as it's much more moisturizing than your powder or cream foundations. These can usually be applied with a foundation brush, a makeup sponge, or even your fingers. Some of my favorite liquid foundations are Revlon's Nearly Naked and Nars Sheer Glow.

Cream Foundation
Cream foundation is just that - a foundation in a cream formula. I bet you knew that one already. Some people prefer these over liquid and powder foundation because of the formula and application. I've personally never really tried cream foundation, but I have heard that Chanel makes great cream foundations.

Powder Foundation
Powder foundation is great for people with oily skin. This is great if you know you'll be sweating it up in the club or sweet 16. It tends to last longest of the three. I have several favorites. I use Shiseido's SPF Powder Foundation in the summer. It leaves your face looking so smooth and poreless. I only wish they made this without the SPF, then I could have one for nights as well. My other favorite is MUFE's powder foundation. It's very buildable and lasts quite a while!

Tips & Tricks
- Always wash your hands before applying makeup. Some liquid foundations don't have pumps, so you'll have to pour it out on the back of your hand. You want to make sure your hands are clean before touching your face.
- Make sure to apply Primer before foundation. This helps keep your foundation .
- Different liquid foundations have different ways of applying them. I noticed that a lot of people like applying Nars Sheer Glow with the fingertips because it helps keep the foundation a liquid while spreading it throughout the face. I personally love using my fingertips as I feel like brushes just apply too streaky and eat up a lot of the product. But, to each, her own!
- Be careful not to over apply because you may start to look cakey.
- If you are having a problem with the caking, make sure you exfoliate your face well before you apply foundation. You'll have a much nicer palette to work with.
- If you know you'll be taking photographs while wearing foundation, try to find one without SPF. SPF is what makes you suddenly glow white in photographs. Even if it's SPF 5, you will still glow! So steer clear of SPF when taking photographs. My personal favorites that are spf free are Nars Sheer Glow and MUFE's powder foundation. Obviously if you're going out in the sun, please wear SPF.
- Not sure what your color is? Temptalia has an awesome matrix that helps you figure out your skin tone.

I hope that this has been helpful for you! Tune in next week Tuesday at 6pm for Bronzer!
